The district of Meißen is a district in the northern centre of the Free State of Saxony, through which the river Elbe flows. The district town of Meißen is best known for its porcelain manufactory. This was the first European manufactory in the year it was founded in 1710 and still enjoys a worldwide reputation today. Agriculture is mainly characterised by the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, while the region's wine, which is appreciated and widely known among connoisseurs, thrives on the northern slopes of the Elbe. The district also enjoys a good reputation for tourism. It offers many famous buildings, such as Moritzburg Castle, which is well-known from films and television. Wackerbarth Castle is the centre of Germany's easternmost wine region.
