The district of Central Saxony is located in the southwest of the Free State of Saxony. The district seat is the district town of Freiberg. The district stretches from the Mittelsächsisches Hügelland in the north over the foothills of the Erzgebirge to the heights of the Osterzgebirge. The region is characterised by mining dumps as well as artificial ponds and ditches, which ensured the water supply and disposal of the former ore mining industry for centuries. This still characterises the region today and, together with the traditional arts and crafts, attracts many tourists. Economically, the semiconductor and solar industries have gained in importance in recent years. There are two famous universities in the district, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida.
