Area: 1,653.64 km²
The district of Sächsische-Schweiz / Osterzgebirge (Saxon-Switzerland / Eastern Ore Mountains) borders from the Saxon state capital Dresden to the northern Bohemian border region of the Czech Republic. Geographically, the district includes the Saxon, Erzgebirge and Lusatian mountain regions, as well as numerous dams, such as the Malter and Klingenberg dams. Extensive forest areas also fall within the district's territory. The district was formed as part of a district area reform in 2008 and numerous large district towns offer cultural and tourist highlights. In Altenberg, for example, the visitor mine can be visited, in Pirna the GDR Museum and in Dippoldiswalde the historic old town centre with its market square and late Gothic town hall. The region's economy was shaped by mining and is now mainly financed by tourism. Tourists can enjoy special attractions such as the narrow-gauge railway or the Glashütte Clock Museum.
