Culture
Over the centuries, many significant cultural assets have been created in Saxony.
Famous objects of folk art such as Meissen porcelain, Seiffen woodwork and Plauen lace originate from the craft sector far beyond Saxony's borders. Many famous works of architecture were also created. The Saxon electors left behind imposing buildings and art collections. These include historic buildings such as the Dresden Zwinger or Moritzburg Palace, but also many other magnificent buildings. The collected art treasures as well as important paintings of the classical and modern periods can be admired in the many museums. One of the most famous opera houses in Germany is the Semper Opera House in Dresden. Many famous musicians come from Saxony, such as Richard Wagner (born 22 May 1813 in Leipzig, died 13 February 1883 in Venice, Italy). But Saxony has more to offer than just old cultural treasures. Modern movements such as Expressionism also originated in Saxony. Likewise, some famous writers such as Erich Kästner (born 23 February 1899 in Dresden, died 29 July 1974 in Munich) and Karl May originated in Saxony (born 25 February 1842 in Ernstthal, died 30 March 1912 in Radebeul).
